Ghanaian Barbershop Sign

I don't even know where to begin. This vintage 1980s/1990s sign has A LOT of rediculously relevant stuff going on. History, vibrant colors, Kid n' Play hairstyles (you can have your pick of the 'Concord,' the 'Gentle Cut,' or the 'Boeing 707') - need I go on?! I think I'd be even more intrigued as to how this sign made it from Ghana to Baltimore...do you check it? Carry on? I must know more.

Vintage Industrial Drafting Stools/PoP Phenomenal Finds

These are definitely the same ones we had in highschool and in my college Design department (War Eagle!)...I'm sure they look pretty familiar to a lot of you. But I love the yellow and the price is pretty friggin great. I think the ad is saying $35 each or $225 for eight. Again, large numbers of matching stools on CL are hard to come by, much less ones with this much character.

$35 - 1950s Step Stool

I have a stool almost identical to this one (mine's blue), and I love it. It's every bit as functional as it seems, and because it looks so damn good, you never have to feel like you have to store it away between uses. By the way...that gorgeous color looks to be pretty close to the 2012 Pantone Color of the Year: Tangerine Tango. Legit.

This similar, baby blue one is pretty sweet too.

School Lockers!

A couple of incredible locker options here! Greg bought some old lockers off of CL, originally used in a Trailways Bus station, to store all of his tools in our mudroom. They have a great industrial vibe and manage to store (and hide) almost all of his man-ish items, while adding some real character to the space.

I have no idea how old this is but I love it. The benches appear to fold under the table...! And is that an electrical plug I see on the end?! The ad says it needs a little love, but it just might be worth the time.

And how about this one on eBay?? It folds into a briefcase...I would love for somone to show up to the National Gallery's Jazz in the Garden with it.

$100 - Vintage John Deere Pedal Tractors!

I'm pretty sure that, if I ever have kids, they will grow to hate me because I'll be the parent who refuses to buy anything new for them (or anything that requires batteries...). They don't make toys like they used to, and they certainly don't make cast metal tractors like these!

In my family, the green and yellow of John Deere is king...our family farm in Tennessee is equipped with (among others) a Model 2030 that's still chugging along. My Grandfather (we call him 'Daddidah') bought it when my dad was a kid, and my cousins and I grew up riding on the wheel wells as my Dad bush hogged around the property - he even taught me to drive it. Good memories;)

The pedal tractors I've found here are eerily similar to the one that my Grandfather bought for my Uncle Tom in 1967 or '68 for $10 at a junk shop in Ethridge, Tennessee...Daddidah remembers Tom riding in circles in the open garage of their Huntsville, Ala. home, tongue hanging out the entire time. How about you make one of those low-tech kinds of memories for yourself? Pick up one of these options and you can do just that - and tell Fisher Price to take a hike while you're at it...

This is a great price - these tractors are highly collectible these days.

Off the List - Flea Market Field Trip

I spent Saturday afternoon with my lovely friend and neighbor Lena and we stopped at a great flea market located at Florida and 14th. This place is amazing and is chalk full of rare finds, colorful characters, and great food (ok, I haven't tasted it but smells inticing...) all packed into a lot that used to house a fine establishment by the name of Latino Auto Sales. It was an empty lot for far too long, and I'm glad to see it get some use!

Marty, whose business card touts "Antiques, Collectibles and Curious Items from Other Eras and Neat Old Stuff," had this 1950s RCA Listening chair. It was in immaculate shape and he informs me that it can be yours for a cool $300...I found this pair on ebay. Marty says you can find him all over, but be sure to visit him at the Gaithersburg Antique & Collectible Show - February 11-12 at the Montgomery Couty Fairgrounds. He was interesting and knowlegdeable about all of his offerings.

And what self-respecting collector/hipster/design snob doesn't love metal type...? There was a dealer who had 3 tables overflowing with the stuff. I wanted it all.

I also met Leonard (Leonard, if you're reading this and I got your name wrong...I'm so sorry! Please correct me!). He had some really unique finds and I personally scored a set of 1950s National Parks felt pennants. He also had a collection of Fire King bowls, vintage glasses, and a super sweet 1950s hand ice crusher.

Be sure to check these guys out, every Saturday at Florida & 14th. While I love Craigslist, it sometimes doesn't hold a candle to getting out in the world on a sunny weekend (with a dear friend as company!), and finding something amazing along the way;)
